This article in Linux Journal has some interesting information on emergent standards and systems for embedding meta tags in documents to provide locational information.
One earlier system, interestingly named, is ICBM:
meta content="latitude, longitude" name="ICBM"
Another newer system provides "geo-structure" -
meta content="40.4157;-3.6947" name="geo.position"
meta content="ES-M" name="geo.region"
meta content="Paseo del Prado" name="geo.placename"
