Open Source Community Resources for Aerial Imagery

I was just in a conversation with a friend of mine - I found that he's been wrestling with some homebrew code for managing large aerial photos - and the usual issues of performance, memory management, caching, and multiresolution data came up. A number of useful resources in the Open Source community are available in that arena, and I thought I would share some of them:

OSSIM is a high performance software system for remote sensing, image processing, geographical information systems and photogrammetry. It is an open source software project maintained at http://www.ossim.org/ and has been under active development since 1996. The lead developers for the project have years of experience in commercial and government remote sensing systems and applications.

OSSIM has been funded by several US government agencies in the intelligence and defense community and the technology is currently deployed in research and operational sites. The name OSSIM is a contrived acronym (Open Source Software Image Map) that is pronounced “awesome” – the acronym was established by our first government customer.


Another interesting effort ongoing is the Open Aerial Map project, spearheaded by the prodigiously prolific MetaCarta map ninja and OpenLayers/TileCache developer Christopher Schmidt:

This project is an attempt to gather data from various free and open aerial imagery datasources around the world, and use them to create a single, coherent open world view.

Both of these sites contain code repositories, documentation, and other community resources are available, such as IRC chat channels.

As of June 4, 2007, the USGS will be releasing selected Landsat 7 image data of the United States through the Web (glovis.usgs.gov or earthexplorer.usgs.gov). These data are of high quality with limited cloud cover (referred to as the Landsat ETM+ SLC-off L1T Standard Product).

This Web-enabled distribution of new and recently acquired data is a pilot project for the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM), currently projected for launch in 2011.

The project will allow the Landsat data user community to help refine the distribution system planned for the upcoming LDCM. Each scene will be registered to the terrain, or “ortho-rectified,” prior to being placed on the Web. Copies of these data will also be available on CD or DVD at the cost of reproduction.

Landsat data have proven useful for a wide range of applications. From disaster monitoring after Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian tsunami to global crop condition analysis, Landsat data are being used by scientists around the world.

The Web-based distribution system will allow the user community easier access to Landsat 7 data. The pilot project will be carefully examined. Customer response will be evaluated and their insight will influence the future distribution system.

Cameroon GIS Data - and the benefits of technology

I have gotten a few good responses regarding Cameroon GIS data for the Engineers Without Borders project thus far. Things like this make me consider how fortunate we are -

Here in the US, there are quite a few excellent datasets, rich with attributes, and with excellent positional accuracy.

Satellite technology and other approaches have made it much easier to get data for rural areas and those without the economic support for GIS that we enjoy here.

I can't imagine getting this far, this quickly trying to do any of this 10 or 15 years ago...

So far, I have obtained SRTM tiles with elevation data and quite a few other datasets, for protected areas, land use/land cover and other information... This is starting to come together. But please keep the suggestions and data coming...

In Search of Cameroon GIS Data

I am currently working with Engineers Without Borders to look at a project in Cameroon, to provide a rural village with a viable potable water supply. To this end, I am looking for any pointers toward GIS data, aerial photos, elevation data, imagery and anything else of value in engineering design and environmental science that would help in design of water distribution, water conveyance via pipeline, wastewater treatment and the like. I'd like to be able to evaluate the big picture, with regard to potential opportunities and constraints to engineering design, ahead of a site visit to take place later in the year.

Never know what you might discover...

I have to admit, I am a Google Earth junkie, and as a technocrat, I have multiple machines at my desk. When one is going to be sitting semi-idle or running background tasks for any period of time, I sometimes fire up Google Earth on it, zoom in to a low altitude, put a slight angle tilt on the view, and set it at a lazy drift over some semi-randomly selected countryside.

Periodically, I will stop and sit in amazement at some of the scenery. Ancient ruins, meteor craters, breathtaking landscapes... the lunar landscape of the Libyan desert, you name it. I also periodically check out the goodies that sites like Google Earth Hacks have, as well as some of the other sites that track not just Google Earth, but other sites featuring imagery.

Google Karten tracks Google Maps, and picked up one of the more amazing things I've seen in a while... A cruise missile, captured in-flight over Utah...


In the Amazon Mechanical Turk effort to analyze imagery for potential clues in the disappearance of Jim Gray, I thus far managed to log 185 units of 5 images each, the count was well over 4000 when I started, and the last one I completed said 1 remaining. It was plainly evident that I had a great deal of company throughout this effort.

Certainly there were several instances of images where boats, along with their associated wakes, could be seen in the images, however a great many were difficult to read, with a great deal of reflectance, cloud cover, and so on.

It will be interesting to see what the next steps are - whether more data or additional passes will be offered up through Mechanical Turk, and if any of what participants identified will ultimately be able to correlated to other activity in the vicinity, or indeed provide clues to Gray's location.

The Search for Jim Gray

I have been trying my hand at Amazon's Mechanical Turk - scouring imagery in search of missing Microsoft Research guru Jim Gray. Dr. Gray is the father of TerraServer and many other groundbreaking pursuits at Microsoft. Coast Guard efforts to date have been fruitless, as the story continues to unfold. Through a collaborative effort, recent imagery of the search area has been posted on Amazon's Mechanical Turk, in the hopes that signs of his 40-foot sailboat, life rafts or any other signs can be found, in a collaborative effort.



It is somewhat challenging, as image resolutions and scene conditions for the images I have had are not optimal for finding a 40-foot sailboat, let alone smaller features, such as a liferaft, but it is good to see that efforts like Mechanical Turk are becoming available toward organizing massive human effort toward detection and other tasks.

My hopes and prayers remain with Dr. Gray's family, friends and colleagues.

National Land Cover Database (NLCD 2001)
The U.S. Geological Survey, on behalf of the interagency Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium (MRLC), is pleased to announce the availability of NLCD 2001 products for the conterminous United States. These products are web enabled for download from the MRLC website at www.mrlc.gov. NLCD 2001 products include 21 classes of land cover, percent tree canopy and percent urban imperviousness at 30 m resolution derived from Landsat imagery. NLCD 2001 will support a wide variety of users, institutional sectors and local- to national-scale applications with this updated land-cover data. Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico will be completed by December of 2007, which will then represent the first compilation of nationwide land cover ever produced at 30-meter resolution.


Great news for a wide variety of applications - I was just looking at a watershed application, myself, where this data will fit quite nicely.

I did a quick check, it's not yet visible in the MRLC map viewer, however the data is available via FTP - visit the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics site: http://www.mrlc.gov/

USACE Topographic Engineering Center

As I mentioned in a prior post, the US Army Corps of Engineers Topographic Engineering Center was spotlighted at ESRI FedUC - CW4 Mike Harper gave an overview of quite a few interesting things going on in their enterprise, geared toward delivery of imagery and data down to the tactical level, along with collaborative data collection at the soldier level.

One interesting program is the award-winning BuckEye program, which gathers imagery using easily-deployable 39MP sensors, LIDAR, and other means, to provide imagery and DTM models which allow tremendous detail. Sample images shared with the audience included detail such as extension cords, individual slats of wooden pallets and other items to be identified - from imagery flown at 4000ft above the scene. These BuckEye soldiers and contractors have selflessly placed themselves in harms way toward gaining crucial data for military support, toward stabilizing volatile areas in Iraq and Afghanistan while minimizing noncombatant risk, particularly in urbanized areas, where detailed and granular intelligence is critical.

Other applications include the Urban Tactical Planner, Urban Skyline Explorer, and many others. Toward GPS and locational capabilities, TEC has been pursuing Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR), which allows military mapping products to be used as a backdrop - and as the demand for DAGR has outstripped production, TEC has also been working with Garmin toward allowing military mapping products from NGA to be brought into Garmin platforms as well.

Another interesting program described was in providing a framework for data collection at the tactical level - here soldiers can be debriefed or enter data directly, to be captured, geoenabled and databased, to provide a more transparent and collaborative means for sharing data at the tactical level.
