A new book out from ESRI Press echoes the mantra of organizations like Sierra Club- encouraging the use of GIS at a local level of granularity to solve global problems.

Think Globally, Act Regionally: GIS and Data Visualization for Social Science and Public Policy Research , by Richard LeGates, ISBN: 1-58948-124-0

It's always great to see practical applications, particularly geared toward solving issues of stewardship and raising consciousness of issues beyond just a local level.
